Understory is a vertical-focused software solution built for experience businesses - from kayak tours to cooking classes. With our operating system, experience creators manage their operations, grow their bookings, accept payments and run their business with more clarity and less stress.

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help us build the next generation of tools for experience businesses. Your first task will be to play a key role in implementing our new  payment solution - making sure both creators and their guests enjoy a seamless, high-converting checkout. But your impact won’t stop there: you will contribute across our product, helping us move fast on the features that matter most. This role is about turning complex problems into simple, reliable solutions that scale as we grow. The Understory Stack

We've built Understory platform from a perspective of excellence and ambition.

To us, this means we've built the platform with scale in mind, but without overengineering it from the get-go. We keep our goals and ambitions in sight when we make decisions, but we're realistic of what we need to do, to also move fast.

With this in mind, we've chosen to build Understory on a modern and proven stack:

• Our Backend services are written in Go and TypeScript, running on AWS Lambda
• Frontends are built in React and Next.js, hosted on Vercel
• We've utilized an event-driven architecture in critical areas
• Fully automated CI/CD with GitHub Actions
• All infrastructure is hosted on AWS and managed using Terraform

• Contribute across the product — tackling the highest-priority features that help experience businesses grow.
• Solve complex technical challenges with simple, reliable solutions that scale.
• Collaborate closely with product and design to turn ideas into well-crafted code.
• Strengthen our engineering practices, systems, and tools as we grow the platform.
